When I Get Tired by Garen Zakarian

When I get tired
the Earth will cease spinning
and thoughts will be suspended
in the air
dormant as a bureaucrat’s mind
When I get tired
I’ll choose the exit called surrender
deprived of dignity it never had
like a sewer pipe in its sleep
dreaming of a mountain spring
When I get tired
I will erase all words from dictionaries
so there’ is nothing more to say
I’ll pack all five lines
of a solfeggio book into one
and every note will sound the same
When I get tired
I’ll cram myself into a black box
and label it
“Do Not Recycle.”
