Voices at Night by John Dowell

Why do you stay?
          I stay for morning
          breaking over the waters
          like the surprise of love
          in her eyes
For what do you arrive?
          The woman at the bar
          with long black hair
          and ancient eyes
          dancing drums shadow beasts
and prayers to the fleeing ones
Of what do you dream?
          I dream of whispered
          forgotten kisses
          under buffalo robes
          and almond moon-skin
          under rough hands
Why do you hope?
Because of giggles behind the couch
          like fireflies
and the surprise of icy water
down deep in a summer pond
