The Year of the Dog by Garen Zakarian

Overall the night was festive
On New Year’s Eve of twenty-something four
They served scrumptious meals at banquet halls
All were presumably invited
The snow refused to come
It rained
Elsewhere gluttony was at its highest
En masse the stats were beat
New plans and resolutions drafted
The snow was running late
It rained more
On the streets
consumer jaws spitting incessant jabber
glared at half-emptied shelves
A stray dog waited patiently
outside a liquor store
His owner stepped inside last season
ten canine years ago
Still waiting, nodding at the passerby
it didn’t know the snow was cancelled
It kept raining
