Snow is Black When by John Dowell

After James Wright’s
Two Spring Charms
It sleeps
under the sun-blinded stare
of an old cedar
A horse called Patches
stands shivering
in a blue wind
The young pauper Spring
hops in the back of my truck
looking for work
The old man
stumbles home drunk
and steals my bed
A seal is butchered
and the Norse god
sings his name
