Mountains by Ralph Hager

forgotten islands
shade a paragraph of day
a house animals live in
cumulus clouds beach on hilltops
spill their loads and sink
to the desert floor
though the ocean is gone
clouds paint the sand
with cool fingers of heat
like a lover winter had stolen
who escaped on an April wind
moments begin to quicken
the moon watches the road
a juniper's scar
under the earth’s beard
lightning walks the arroyos
between sundown and night
moonlight flakes silver into night
the sun burns behind the mountain
evening drops into the valley
in a transparent waterfall
