Mother’s Absence: Year 14 by Garen Zakarian

In the grand scheme of things
your absence is dwarfed
by fourteen winters
cold and distant
deep inside the permafrost
The river never keeps a promise
partnering with time
One hardly knows
where it may end
but you’re as solid as terra firma
You never failed
never asked for anything
like where I was heading
to which universe and why
did I forget to book
a seat for you
